Why is a Quarterback called a Quarterback

Mike's Sports Book: Why is a Quarterback called a Quarterback(Q) Why do they call the guy who receives the ball in football, the quarterback?

(M) Good question! According to my research, the answer may be as simple as he is a quarter of the way back from the line of scrimmage behind the center. The game of American football is, however, based upon rugby, and the meanings of the named positions are much more understandable in the original sport. Because, by the logic that named the quarterback, a halfback (who stands behind the fullback) would be called a one-and-a-half back. So, all the names and meanings don’t translate exactly, especially for the offensive players. The defenders seem to be a little more logical, but this might be more of an answer than you wanted with this question.
